The Guernsey Rugby Academy has developed its own coaching manual with CD coaching resources included and this provides our coaches with guidance on appropriate coaching techniques and the specific development aims for each year group.

Tag Rugby course – a three hour course open to anyone over 14 years that aims to provide

  • Instruction on how to provide a safe and enjoyable session
  • Knowledge of how to coach and improve skills and game sense
  • Information about the rules and their application

Rugby Ready course – a five hour course for coaches and teachers is open to anyone over 16 years that wants to improve their rugby skills, including the:-

> Fundamentals of contact rugby

> Programmes for teaching tackling, scrums, lineouts, rucks and mauls safely and effectively

> Coaching skills

RFU Level 1 course – this two day course provides an introduction to rugby union and the principles of safe, ethical and effective management and coaching of young people who will be able to assist a qualified coach. This course offers an opportunity for aspiring rugby union coaches to develop their knowledge and skills in a local club environment. The course is open to anyone over 16 years who has already completed the Rugby Ready course.

 

RFU (towards) Level 2 and CPD courses – as part of a process of Continual Personal Development it is anticipated that there will be opportunities arising in conjunction with Tiger’s week, the Ronez weekend when held in Jersey and other Level 1 courses being conducted in Guernsey from time to time to allow Level 1 coaches to progress towards the units needed to complete a Level 2 coaching qualification. This will enhance a coach’s game sense and ability to progress their coach development to a higher level.

CPD plays an important part in the development of a coach, and coaches should undertake these courses before, after and alongside attendance at qualification courses. The courses are designed to support coaches with training appropriate to the type of player they are working with.

RFU Level 2 course– this four day theory and practical course is open to anyone who has obtained a Level 1 qualification and is over 18 years of age. This course will teach you how to coach of a group or team of players e.g. club youth coach, club coach, teacher, representative coach, talent development coach and involves – Competency based continual assessment. – Open book multi choice Test and Home Study Tasks.

Safeguarding and Protection of young people in rugby course – this three hour course is for any member or volunteer who is working with or has responsibility for children or young people in a rugby environment. This course provides participants with the ability to identify best practice in rugby, identify signs and indicators of possible abuse and poor practice and to recognise the role of a coach in safeguarding and protecting young people in rugby.

RFU Equity course – this three hour course is for any member or volunteer who is working with or has responsibility for children or young people in a rugby environment. The RFU and RFUW seek to implement and promote equity and equality through the monitoring of practices, procedures and data relating to the operations of competitions, schemes, initiatives and development materials, and regular review sof existing rules and regulations to ensure that they do not inhibit the participation of people from groups which may suffer discrimination are required.

All participants must have an up to date CRB Certificate.

Any coach who is a member of the Guernsey Academy and intends to coach will have their course costs met by the Academy for the above list of courses. If coaches are interested in progressing to RFU Level 3 or 4 the Academy would be prepared to consider further funding assistance to assist.
